Just getting back into pokemon again. Gotta make sure my teams are up to battling!
Looking back on all generations....I think my favorite starters are summed up in this list.
1st gen- Blastoise
2nd gen-Feraligatr
3rd gen- Sceptile or Swampert, really they all were nice
4th gen- Empoleon
There are no fire starters in this list, but that doesnt mean I didn't like them. I have a Typhlosion in my team, and Blaziken was great for battle, but....they lacked a certain charm.
I did not like: Venusaur, Charizard, Meganium, or infernape
Sceptile is one of the fastest grass pokemon, many of which are rather slow. Roserade being another very speedy and powerful pokemon. If doing a starter team, I would definitely include sceptile.
Charizard is harolled as the most popular and one of the best fire types. I dont like Charizard because it is so popular, it has glaring weaknesses because of its dual /flying type, and it was pretty pissy in the anime. It is only popular because it is a traditional fire-breathing, flying dragon. It is indeed fomidible when properly trained, but I would much rather prefer Typhlosion, which can learn eruption, and lacks the /flying type. Having /flying makes Charizard vunerable to electricity, ice, and rock. In exchange, it gives full protection to ground, and half protection to bug and fighting. This is good, but the more popular moves are indeed its weaknesses. Still a strong pokemon, I won't argue that. It only true weaknesses are water, electricity, and rock. But, one good hit from an electrivire or Empoleon, and Charizard is done. I have killed many dragons in my time, fire breathing and not.
Charizard is about as popular in use as Gyarados because of their high power, above average speed, and durability. Gyarados is the Charizard's water equivalent, albeit with higher power and special defense.
Milotic is Gyarados' counterpart, being depicted as a beautiful creature that spreads harmony and peace through its loveliness. It specializes in Sp. defense, the opposite of gyarados, a brash, outrage-prone, and wild, and fairly ugly water dragon.
What I would like to see is a dragon/ice. It would be effectively the same as dragon/water, having dragon as its only weakness. Dragon types are resistant to fire, water, electricity, and grass, the main starter types. Because most dragons have /flying or /ground as their subtypes, they are doubly weak to ice, a dragon's natural weakness. The exceptions being Dialga, Palkia, Lugia, Giratina, and Kingdra. I would like to see the dragon type expanded, although there are alot of dragon look alikes, such as Charizard, Tyranitar, Aggron, and Milotic, and Gyarados.
The oddest draon pokemon I think is Altaria. Its a bird pokemon from 3rd gen, its wings are made of clouds. It could be considered a dragon as mush as Ho-oh could be, yet it is a dragon/flying type.
My favorite dragon pokemon is Rayquaza. Its big, bad, wild, and flies in the ozone layer. Garchomp and Giratina are interesting too.
Heatran is possibly the most unique legendary, being only one that is catchable, but it is the only one to have a gender. Its not very good for use, its fire/steel type makes it incredibly weak to ground and water attacks. It can curiously walk upside down, as if it had suction pads on its feet.
My favorite steel pokemon is Steelix. Its such a nice giant rock snake :3 but not very useful for battle. It is actually ground/steel, which is unique among steel types, but still has around the same weaknesses as rock/steel. It gains resistance to grass, but thats about it. the only thing saving it from complete destruction is its steel type, which is resistant to everything by fire, water, fighting, and ground. Its /ground type gives it no added resistance to any of these types, making it not very good for battle. My second favorite steel type is Registeel. Something about its body and "eyes" are interesting. Its also got battle worthy stats, and is one of 2 pure steel types. The other being mawile, which I thought should have been steel/dark. Of course, a dual dark type would have been detrimental.
A rock pokemon actually useful is aerodactyl. Its speed is vicious, better than most pokemon, making it the fastest rock type. The strongest rock type is Rampardos, having near the highest attack of all pokemon. The highest defense rock type is Shuckle, the next being regirock and steelix tied.
